*WWF World Wildlife Fund

WWF World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada) was founded in 1967 by Senator Alan MacNaughton, and has become one of the country's leading conservation organizations, enjoying the active support of more than 150,000 Canadians. Their goal is to "stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, by:

• conserving the world's biological diversity,

• ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable,

• promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption."

In Canada, their energies are directed to completing a national network of marine protected areas, safeguarding the Arctic, supporting leading-edge research to protect Canadian wildlife and habitats, addressing priority conservation concerns for North America, and protecting Cuban wildlife and habitats. WWF employs a range of tools to achieve its conservation results. These include field research, scientific mapping, policy initiatives, market solutions and public education. WWF works closely with local communities and others who share the common goal of protecting the natural world.

This week, CULTURA will raise money to help the WWF with their efforts to protect the Emperor Penguin and its habitat.

Emperor penguins live on the floating ice packs and islands of the Antarctic. Known as the "giant of the penguins," an adult emperor penguin can be up to four feet tall and weigh up to 80 pounds. Unable to fly and clumsy on land, it is most at home underwater. In March, adult birds leave the sea and travel as far as 150 miles across the ice to nesting areas where they will breed. Climate change is a growing problem for penguin populations as changing ocean conditions due to climate change have reduced food availability.
